The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
